You have probably seen the phrase everywhere: the 10-year Golden Visa, long-term residency, freedom from renewing your paperwork every couple of years. It is real, and for the right person it is genuinely useful. But most of what gets said about it online is either wrong or wildly optimistic.
Here is the honest version. The Golden Visa is long-term residency, nothing more and nothing less. It does not come with a company. It does not come with a bank account. It does not make you tax-free. A large share of the people chasing the 10-year headline would be better off with a standard investor visa they could qualify for through a straightforward company setup, rather than waiting to clear a much higher Golden Visa threshold.
This guide explains what the visa actually is, how it works, and how to tell whether you should be pursuing it at all.
The Golden Visa is a long-term UAE residence visa. Where a standard residence visa typically ties you to an employer or a small business setup and needs renewing every year or two, the Golden Visa gives you residency for a fixed long term. Crucially, it does not require a national sponsor or an employer to hold it.
That is the whole product. It is a residency permit with a longer clock and fewer strings. It is issued and governed by the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security (ICP). Because the categories, thresholds and process are set by the authority and change over time, you should treat the official ICP guidance as the source of truth, and confirm any specific figure before you act on it.
The Golden Visa is issued for either 5 or 10 years, depending on which category you qualify under, and it is renewable. Which term you get is tied to the eligibility route, not something you choose.
Two features make it different from an ordinary residence visa:
Renewal isn't automatic in the sense of "granted no matter what", it depends on you still meeting the category conditions. Approval, first time and at renewal, rests with the authority. Anyone telling you a Golden Visa is guaranteed is telling you something they cannot stand behind.
The Golden Visa is not a single test. It is a set of categories, each with its own criteria. The main routes include:
Each route carries its own thresholds, such as an investment amount, a salary level, a property value, or an academic or professional standing. These figures are set by the authority and they change. We are not going to print a number from memory here, because a stale threshold is worse than no number at all, it sends people chasing a target that may have moved. Check the current threshold on the official ICP source, and have a consultant confirm it against your specific profile before you commit money to it.
The honest point buried in this list is that the investor and entrepreneur thresholds are meaningful. They are not a low bar. Plenty of people who assume they will qualify discover the number is well above where they are today.
Stripped of the marketing, the real benefits are:
That is a genuinely good list. But notice what is on it: it is all about residency. Nothing on that list is a company, an account or a tax break, which brings us to the part most articles skip.
This is the section a competitor would delete. It is the one that matters most.
If someone has sold you the Golden Visa as a route to a tax-free UAE company, they have sold you a story, not the visa.
Here is the trade-off almost nobody frames honestly.
A standard investor visa, which is the residence visa you get as the owner of a UAE company, is available to you as soon as your company is formed. It is shorter-term and needs renewing, but the entry point is far lower and you can have it in a matter of weeks, not once you have cleared a high investment threshold.
A Golden Visa gives you a longer term and more flexibility if you already meet a category threshold that is, for most people, considerably higher.
So the real question is not "which is better". It is "which can I actually get today, and does the longer visa justify waiting or investing more to reach it?" For a lot of founders and small investors, the answer is to set up the company, take the investor visa now, and revisit the Golden Visa later once the business or the investment has grown into the threshold.
For the investor and entrepreneur routes, the visa and the business are linked, but the sequence runs the way most people do not expect. The company usually comes first. It is the vehicle through which you invest, operate, and in many cases evidence the substance a Golden Visa category asks for.
This is also where the practical, available-today path lives. A UAE company formation gives you a real entity, the ability to apply for an investor residence visa, and the foundation you would need to later pursue a Golden Visa on an entrepreneur or investor basis if the numbers work. The company is the thing that actually unlocks the residency, not the other way round.
If your goal is to live and work in the UAE and run a business, forming the company is the concrete first step. The visa strategy, standard now and Golden later, is a decision you make on top of it.
Ask yourself three things, honestly:
The Golden Visa is a strong instrument for the right profile. It is also over-sold to people who would be better served, faster and more cheaply, by a company and a standard investor visa.
We will not quote you a Golden Visa threshold from memory. Those are set by the authority and change, and we confirm the current figure against your profile before you spend anything. What we can do today is form your UAE company, get you a realistic path to an investor visa, and tell you plainly whether chasing the Golden Visa now is worth it or whether it should wait.
Talk to an advisor and we will map your situation to the route you can actually get, before you pay for the one you cannot.
Either 5 or 10 years, depending on the eligibility category you qualify under, and it is renewable. Which term applies is set by your route, not chosen. Both the duration rules and categories are governed by the ICP, so confirm the current position for your case.
No. Residency status does not create a tax exemption. UAE corporate tax is 9% on net profit above AED 375,000 for financial years starting on or after 1 June 2023, regardless of your visa. Your personal tax position, including any liability elsewhere, should be established with an accountant.
Yes. The Golden Visa allows you to sponsor family members, and in some cases domestic staff, subject to the authority's current conditions. We can confirm exactly who you can include for your situation.
The Golden Visa is more forgiving of time spent outside the UAE than a standard residence visa, which is usually cancelled after a set absence. But the allowance is not unlimited, and it is set by the authority. Check the current rule rather than assume.
No. It is a personal residency permit. A company must be formed separately, and a bank account is decided by the bank under its own compliance checks. The visa can support your profile, but it does not confer either.
A standard investor visa comes with owning a UAE company, is available quickly at a lower entry point, and needs periodic renewal. The Golden Visa runs 5 or 10 years with more flexibility, but usually requires meeting a much higher threshold. For many people the investor visa is the route they can get today.
Not for every category. Routes like specialised talent or property investment do not require one. But for the entrepreneur and investor routes, the company is usually the vehicle through which you qualify. If your aim is to run a business here, forming the company is the practical first step either way.
