Here is the sentence most setup firms will not put in writing: holding a UAE company does not, on its own, qualify you for a Golden Visa.
Plenty of people are sold a free zone licence with the implication, or the outright claim, that it is a path to ten-year residency. It usually is not. The Golden Visa is granted against specific categories, thresholds and documentation set by the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs & Port Security (ICP), and a licence alone does not meet any of them. What matters is what you have invested, where, and whether you can evidence it to the authority's standard.
So before you pay for a formation on the strength of a residency promise, it is worth understanding which route you might actually qualify under, and being honest with yourself about whether your numbers are anywhere near it.
The Golden Visa has several qualifying categories. For a business owner, three are worth understanding:
Each has its own criteria and its own evidence. The important point: you are not qualifying because you own a company. You are qualifying because a specific category's threshold and conditions are met, and the company is either the vehicle for that or beside the point entirely.
This is where we have to be careful, and where you should be sceptical of any firm that is not.
The specific figures, the minimum property value, the minimum capital investment, the deposit amounts, are set by the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs & Port Security (ICP) and can change. We are not going to print a number here that we have not confirmed against the official ICP source at the time you actually apply, because a threshold quoted from memory or from a competitor's blog is exactly how people end up committing to a setup that falls short.
What we can tell you plainly:
When you speak to us, we confirm the live threshold for the route you are considering before you spend anything, not after.
The investor route is the one most company owners ask about, so here is how it works in practice.
You are not qualifying by holding a trade licence. You are qualifying by demonstrating a qualifying investment, capital placed into a company or fund at or above the threshold set by the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs & Port Security (ICP), and then proving to the authority that the investment is genuine, that it is yours, and that it meets the category's conditions.
That means the company and the investment have to be structured so the evidence lines up: shareholding that reflects your capital, documentation that ties the funds to you, and a licence and activity consistent with what you are claiming. This is why the structure you choose at formation matters for the visa you want later. A licence set up purely for the cheapest entry point may be genuinely difficult to build a qualifying investment case around.
If you are choosing your structure with a Golden Visa in mind, that goal should shape the business formation from the start, the jurisdiction, the shareholding, and the capital position, rather than being retrofitted onto a setup chosen for a different reason.
A low-cost free zone licence is a real, useful thing. It gives you a genuine UAE company, typically a standard residence visa allocation per the package tier, and a legitimate base to trade internationally. For many businesses that is exactly the right choice.
What it does not do is qualify you for a Golden Visa on its own. The residence visa that comes with a free zone package is a standard visa, not the ten-year Golden Visa. Conflating the two is the single most common misunderstanding we see, and some sellers are happy to let it sit.
If someone is selling you an AED 8,000-ish licence and letting you believe it is a Golden Visa route, that is the moment to walk. It is not. We would rather tell you that now than take your fee for a setup that was never going to get you there.
The Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs & Port Security (ICP) sets the documentation, and it varies by route. Broadly, expect to evidence:
Applications tend to stall on the same things banking applications stall on: the qualifying asset is evidenced vaguely, the valuation or capital falls just short of the live threshold, or the source-of-funds trail has gaps. The route may be right; the file is not ready. That is a fixable problem, but far cheaper to fix before submission than after a rejection.
The exact list is set by the authority and confirmed against current criteria at the time you apply. We confirm the specific requirements for your route rather than assuming a generic checklist.
The honest starting question is not how do I get a Golden Visa but which route, if any, am I actually close to today, and what would it take to get there.
Sometimes the answer is property, and your company is irrelevant to it. Sometimes it is the investor route, and the way your company is structured either helps or hinders the evidence. And sometimes the honest answer is that you are not near any route yet, and the sensible move is to build the business first and revisit residency when your numbers support it. We will tell you that plainly. It costs us a bigger sale today and it is the right advice.
What we control is the assessment and the file, matching you to the route that fits, and preparing documentation to the authority's standard. What we do not control, and what nobody can promise you, is the decision. Golden Visa approval rests entirely with the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs & Port Security (ICP). Any firm guaranteeing it is telling you something that is not credible.
First, we'd assess which route, property, investor, or entrepreneur, you are genuinely closest to, and confirm the current threshold with the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs & Port Security (ICP) before you spend anything. Then, if a company setup is part of the path, we'd structure it so the shareholding and capital actually support the visa you want, rather than picking the cheapest licence and hoping it stretches.
If you're not near any route yet, we'll say so, and tell you what would need to change.
Talk to an advisor and we'll assess your route honestly, confirm the live threshold, and tell you whether your setup gets you there, in one call, before you pay anything. Start with our business formation service.
No, not by itself. A free zone licence gives you a company and usually a standard residence visa, but the Golden Visa is granted against specific investment categories and thresholds set by the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs & Port Security (ICP), which a licence alone does not meet. Whether you qualify depends on a qualifying property or capital investment, confirmed against current criteria.
The threshold is set by the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs & Port Security (ICP) and can change, so we won't quote a figure we haven't confirmed for your application. A number lifted from an old article is exactly how people commit to a setup that falls short. What is certain is that it is well above the cost of a low-cost licence. We confirm the live threshold for your chosen route before you spend anything.
Yes. Property ownership is its own qualifying route, at or above a value threshold set by the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs & Port Security (ICP), and it does not depend on your company at all. For some owners the property route is simpler than restructuring a business to meet the investor criteria. We'd assess both against your actual position.
Golden Visa categories generally require the qualifying investment or asset to be maintained, and the conditions are set by the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs & Port Security (ICP). Because these rules can change and vary by route, we confirm the specific retention requirement for your category rather than assume a general answer.
The Golden Visa is a long-term residence visa, commonly issued for ten years, and its coverage of dependants is defined by the rules of the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs & Port Security (ICP) for your category. Duration and dependant eligibility should be confirmed against current criteria at the time you apply, as they differ by route.
Broadly: identity and status documents, evidence of the qualifying asset (a title deed and valuation for property, or proof of capital investment and company documents for the investor route), and clear source-of-funds evidence. The exact list is set by the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs & Port Security (ICP) and varies by route. We confirm the precise requirements for your specific application.
No, and be cautious of anyone who says otherwise. Approval rests solely with the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs & Port Security (ICP), which assesses your case against its own criteria. What we control is the quality of your file and matching you to the right route; the decision is not ours to promise. That honesty is the point. A guarantee from any advisor would not be credible.
